In War Machine, an escaped slave seeks revenge on the corrupt government in the only way she knows how: by killing all of the people involved. In this story, Rain uses her exotic look to infiltrate social events to target her next victims, all the while using the same corrupt system to free other slaves with the money from the contracts she takes out to kill. When she is coerced by this same corrupt government to go on a mission to her native desert, she has every right to be cautious about their true motives on including her. This adventure is very entertaining and leaves off with a nice cliff-hanger to let you know the direction of the next adventure.

It stands as a great start to something I cannot wait to delve deeper into. Looking forward to this becoming a multiple book series to let these characters grow and develop even more. Would love to see AMC or HBO pick this up in the future and run with it.
I’m glad I picked up War Machine, part one of the Destiny in the Shadows series. It’s an exciting, thrill-packed read with characters that leap off the pages.

At the beginning of the book I thought the main character, Sierrenna, was going to be a stereotypical, hard nut female assassin; but such is the quality of the writing that she comes across as real flesh and blood. In fact by the end of the book I found, somewhat to my surprise, that I cared about all of the characters and even felt anxiety over their fates. It takes a good book to elicit that kind of response and the author has a seriously good talent as well as a vivid imagination.

There is plenty of action and pace in this novel and the clarity in the writing made me feel as though I was there with the characters, running down dark alleys or over rooftops and scaling walls – or descending from them attempting to escape pursuers – and I was holding my breath with them, too. The author has created her world so well that I could picture everything in my mind.

Characters change throughout the book as events overtake them, but the changes are not rushed, and therefore natural. Sierrenna does not let anybody into her emotional life and that aspect is portrayed believably.

My only gripe is that at times, in the dialogue, I wasn’t sure who was speaking and had to read some passages again to make sense of them, but that could be due to the more modern style of joining dialogue and reflection together. It’s not something I am familiar with yet.

I was hoping to carry on reading the second book but it hasn’t been finished yet – when it is available I want to buy it. M L Heron-Heidel is an author to be watched. I know she has a lot more to give yet, and I can recommend this novel wholeheartedly. It’s excellent.
If you love action, this is the type of book you want to get into. Great book, characters are very cool and love the concept.
An Internet rumor, a shadow, a ghost, a wraith, an assassin, with a conscience. A seeker of justice, a cold blooded killer, a disgraced MoiRai warrior. Who is Rain? Is she any of these things? Is she all of these things? What lengths will she go to to achieve her goals? Is she the perfect War Machine?
This novel was simply too great for mere words. I LOVED it. It captured my imagination and my full attention right from the first word. Its style matches that of my former favorite author, Clive Cussler. I say former because Ms. Heron-Heidel has replaced him in that distinction, and I never thought that was possible, but she did it. And, did it with complete ease! I could not put the book down. It's the kind of book that you would curl up with on a cold, grey and snowy day in front of a fireplace, with a glass of the finest bourbon to read. The reader will find themselves standing right there with Rain, Cain and Argon and believably so ... I felt as if I was right there, in the story! The only other author who gave me that type of experience from a novel is/was Cussler, ... and now, Heron-Heidel. Just incredibly amazing to read! And, up until this point, I was never a fan of the genre. Ms. Heron-Heidel, you should be very proud of your work. It is EXCELLENT, and excellent beyond the ability of this mere mortal to express words of praise which would fall far short of describing how he feels about the book.
Rain is an assassin on a mission, who must change directions suddenly. While she seeks to bring down the powerful and their slave dealing ways, she finds a larger threat that she cannot ignore. She is a character with flaws, weaknesses, and mistakes. We follow her adventure with partners, frenemies, and adversaries as she attempts to help stop a vast menace. This is an enjoyable roller-coaster of an adventure. Those who would enjoy it are likely readers who like small unit actions, with strong male and female characters. Be warned, after successfully defusing the main threat in the story, the book ends on a cliffhanger. Overall, a fun adventure.
