Punkzilla Adam Rapp Books Reviews

I was horrified to learn that this book is recommended reading at my daughters school. The 14 year old engages in a three-way with his friend and friend's girlfriend...and this is edifying material for our students? I firmly disagree. There are MUCH better novels that deal with the same "real life issues," without stooping to this level.
The plot wasn't too bad--it's basically a teen runaway hitchhiking across America to get to his brother. The format is intriguing, since the whole story is told through letters and memos. But the story is ruined by all the incredibly coarse language and crudity of the boy's experiences and conversations. I didn't want to read it, and I wish I could forget all about it.
You won't be disappointed. This book is fast paced and quirky in its storytelling. Plus you'll be amused by the main character's vivid descriptions.
Rapp's narrator, 14-year-old Jamie (or "Punkzilla"), is slightly reminiscent of Holden Caulfield from "Catcher in the Rye", but the story itself, written mostly through letters from "Punkzilla" to his brother "P" in Memphis, is all its own.
I teach 8th grade and this novel is a realistic view of the issues and consciousness of this age group today
Some graphic sexual (predatory) activity. Not appropriate for school setting. Didn't need to be in book would have been good without it.
